Raise Your Glass: Pumpkin Spice Edition

I love whey protein… at least in theory.  I love that it’s an easy way for my clients to get the protein they need, that it’s easily absorbable, and that it has a very good amino acid profile. It’s also pretty customizable, based on your needs and tastes.  What’s not to love?  Except maybe the taste…

I’ve used whey protein successfully in my meal plan for nearly five years. But I’m just sort of over the taste and texture.  Bars are ok, but they’re expensive and sometimes they have a lot of added stuff that I don’t need or want.

I am however, like every other American, a huge fan of Pumpkin Spice.  So… how bout a Pumpkin Spice Protein shake? Sure, why not?!

You’ll probably want at least a cheap blender for this, and some good whey protein.  I always recommend Optimum Nutrition (available from GNC).  It seems to be pretty good as far as the amino acid profile, and tastes a lot better than some of the others out there.  (I’m not getting kick backs from any of these companies so this is just me… because people want to know what I use!).  Plus if you buy it at GNC, and hate it, you can return it within 30 days– no matter how much of the product you’ve used. This came in awfully handy when I thought “Cake Batter” would make a good protein choice.  But I have also used Dymatize and like it (and sometimes it’s at Big Lots for a lot cheaper than other brands.) Both brands are gluten free.

So on to all things pumpkin:

  • 1 scoop whey protein
  • 6-8 oz milk
  • 1/2 c canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling!)
  • 1 T Maple Syrup (optional, but adds great taste, and extra carbs if you are using this as preworkout fuel!)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Season to taste with pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, or nutmeg.
  • Ice Cubes (optional, and I don’t like cold things… so use your best judgement.  Just remember that ice may leave your mixture too thick.  Add a little water if you need to!)

Dump it all in the blender and rock n’ roll.
